The port is located at the center of the Venetian lagoon, separated from the sea by a long, thin strip of land interrupted at three points, corresponding to the port mouths of Lido, Malamocco, and Chioggia.

The port of Venice is part of the Padano-Veneto waterway system and has been included by the European Union in the list of priority ports of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) – Baltic-Adriatic and Mediterranean corridor.

AVANMARE
The foreland of the port of Venice is mainly represented by the Italian regions bordering the Adriatic and Ionian seas, Mediterranean countries, Middle Eastern countries, East African countries, South and Southeast Asian countries: it is therefore located on routes of substantial present and future commercial interest, connecting developed countries, developing countries, or newly developed countries.

RETROTERRA
The port of Venice is located at the sea outlet of the Po Valley which, along with the other regions of northern Italy and central Europe its natural hinterland: railways, highways, and waterways functionally equip this territory and ensure its best connection with the lagoon port of call. The port, moreover, is placed at the center of an extensive articulated infrastructure system. Various initiatives are being planned and progressively implemented to further strengthen the road, rail and waterway networks, as well as the airport system.

RAIL NETWORK
The commercial port of Venice has important connections to the railway lines, through the Venice Marghera Scalo – Freight Station of arrival/departure of trains connected to the port area and linking the Venice Marghera Scalo area to the national network via the Venice Mestre-Venice Marghera Scalo line. In particular, 42% of Multi service traffic is handled by rail compared to 9% of the national average.
